Imaginary Forces Creates Animated Logo For Vertigo: "Comics lovers are in for a visual treat when the new animated Vertigo logo is revealed today in front of the much-anticipated feature “V for Vendetta.” Created by Imaginary Forces (IF), the logo design was spearheaded by Creative/Art Director Ahmet Ahmet who worked closely with Founder/Creative Director Peter Frankfurt."

Vertigo, an imprint of graphic novels and comic books published by DC Comics, focuses on darker and more mature themes in its storytelling. Capturing a decadent mood, the Vertigo logo opens with the widely recognized blue-and-white DC Comics logo, which crumbles into a flock of ravens, mascot of the caliginous. The flock is then absorbed into the Vertigo logo, surrounded by an ominous blood-red smoke that fades into nothingness.

For Imaginary Forces, the Vertigo logo marks another successful collaboration with a DC Comics brand. The award-winning design and entertainment agency also created the animated logo for DC Comics in 2005, which premiered in front of “Click for the lowest price on dmnobieblankBatman Begins');" onmouseout="setTimeout('hideLayer()',500);" class="hotlink2">Batman Begins.”

“Vertigo is more grounded in the Edgar Allan Poe genre of the dark and supernatural so that is how we approached our design,” explains Ahmet. “Stylistically, we wanted the logo to be the antithesis of what DC Comics represented, which we achieved by using the ravens and the corrupted crumbling of the DC Comics logo. We went for a hand-drawn look with traditional brush techniques to maintain a more organic feel and to reflect the heritage of the Vertigo brand, a much darker side to DC Comics. Thematically, this is what we had to represent in the logo, but the client was very open to our stylistic approach.”

IESB has the scoop direct from Fox Film Group president Tom Rothman. Their coverage said, "Hugh Jackman recently alluded that the Wolverine spin off film may be a prequel, how accurate is that? Although he says he will get in trouble if he tells, just between him and her, yes it's a prequel."

SUPERMAN RETURNS

Actor Brandon Routh was interviewed by Fox News and spoke about the reasons behind the film's thesis and title. "It's nice to watch the character mature, rather than just to start over again," Routh said. "He gets to continue his journey, which is exciting, I think, for fans, instead of retelling again what we've seen in many different versions. IGN: Aquaman Trails Superman: "March 13, 2006 - Variety reports that, in order to tout the launch of their new TV series Mercy Reef, based on the DC Comics superhero Aquaman, the CW has turned for help from Warners' Man of Steel."

"It's expected that much of the CW's promo resources will be aimed at letting people know there's a new network in town -- with shows they already know and love," the trade claims.

"Parent companies Time Warner and CBS Corp. will help with everything from saturation spots on CBS Radio stations to a potential Aquaman trailer attached to summer tentpole Superman Returns."

Like a galaxy-wide plague of The Flood, the spread of Bungie's first-person shooter Halo into new forms of media appears nigh-unstoppable. Books and music CDs are already on store shelves, Peter Jackson is producing the feature film based on the license, and now Marvel Comics is bringing the license to comic books.

Marvel and Bungie today announced that the comics giant responsible for Spider-Man, the X-Men, and a host of other superheroes will be publishing a graphic novel anthology of tales set in the Halo universe. The 128-page full color volume is set for release in July.

Few details have been revealed about the stories included, but Marvel has said they will feature signature characters and weapons and be set against a backdrop involving the alien races of the Covenant and the Flood. I've watch the movie this morning and I must say this..It was a GREAT movie...and I recommend you to watch it too..

I never read the the Comic c [wriitten by alan Moore] before. So the first version of the V for Vendetta Story is from the movie... Then I do a little bit research and I found a good website that tells and comment more about the Story. I found out that the movie wasnt actually exactly the same as it in the comic. there's a BIT changes for those who are the fan of the V for Vendetta ... Its like Spidey dont use his web shooter in the movie by sam Raimi..

Ok..thats all for today's post... Actually, I'm experiencing too many headache lately..maybe its becaiuse of the weather here..its HOT...

Portman had her locks shaved on screen in a single take. She tried not to lose her head along with her hair.

"It was a one-shot deal, and that was the most stressful thing about the experience,"

Vendetta director James McTeigue recalls the pivotal shearing as just another day at work for the unflappable Portman, 24.

"The first time I saw her about the role, I had her put her hair behind her head because I wanted to see what she looked like bald. That was the only conversation we had about it,"

he says.

"She knew the day was coming. I put three cameras on her, made sure the clippers weren't stuck, and then we shaved her head. She loved it and kept rubbing her head."

That businesslike attitude is on display over an evening chat at the Mandarin Oriental hotel overlooking Central Park. Portman is a pixie in a short-sleeved, dark blue frilly blouse, skintight jeans and silver ballerina flats, her eyes heavily made up for a day of press. But V for Vendetta, which opens Friday, is the first glimpse of a flintier, feistier Portman. The film is based on the graphic novel of the same name, co-written by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, published 15 years ago.

Batman: Hush artist joins Sony Online Entertainment project, expected to serve as executive creative director.

Gamers who pick up the forthcoming massively multiplayer online game based on the DC Comics universe might recognize more than just the colorful assortment of crime fighters and villains. They might also recognize the work of comic artist Jim Lee behind that cast of characters.

DC Comics, Sony Online Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have announced that Lee has been brought on board their upcoming MMOG for next-generation consoles and the PC and is expected to serve as the game's executive creative director.

"Utilizing his outstanding and widely revered talent, Jim Lee's ground-breaking work on the DC MMO will help lend authenticity and strength to the game's design," WBI senior vice president Jason Hall said. "His iconic art style and creative direction will enhance the look and feel of the game overall."

For Lee's part, "massive" seems to be the key word when considering the possibilities of a massively multiplayer game set in the DC universe.

"What intrigues me most about the DC MMO is how we can continue to tell the great stories DC is known for in this new medium and look forward in particular to the challenge of perhaps one day, simultaneously bringing stories to life in both print and pixel form," Lee said. "True to their moniker, MMOs are massive undertakings and I look forward to working on the game and continuing to draw comics for many, many years to come at DC."

Lee, who first gained fame in the early '90s for his work on a pair of Marvel's X-Men comic titles, found acclaim at DC in 2003 with his work on Batman: Hush. He has since completed a stint on Superman and is currently working on All-Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder.

Superman Homepage: "EA has released a new image from 'Superman Returns: The Videogame'. The new image is a 'target render' from their development team. For those not familiar with the term, this image was created with models used in the game. The developers place those models into a 3D program, add lighting and shadows, then render out an image to use as a goal. The game's programmers use this goal image as a visual reference to build towards as the game progresses - basically, this is what they want the game to look like.

In this particular image, Superman battles a mysterious creature that's broken out of Cadmus Labs. Cadmus is best known to comic book fans as the institution where the Superboy clone came from, as well as a whole host of other genetic experiments - some of which turned out better than others."

Singer Shows More Footage of Superman Returns to Malaysian Journalists

Great!! ..Malaysian Journalist was mentioned in Superman Homepage !! :) (I am Malaysian :P) ..I wish I could be the ones who went to meet Brian Singer himself...but that would take the fun out of the movie right? here's from the Superman homepage :

Superman Homepage: "The Star Online eCentral website has posted a report from one of four Malaysian journalists who were given a sneak peek at new 'Superman Returns' footage during an interview with Bryan Singer in his LA studio.

The railway track rattles violently as the sounds of a train chugging away at an enormous speed fills the room. It's not going quite as fast as a speeding bullet, but you can tell that it's going way faster than it should. Suddenly, it crashes through a barrier, and misses a stop. As it approaches the next, you can see the station vibrating. Then someone falls onto the track, and the train runs him, or her, over.

Clark Kent (Brandon Routh) shares a paper with a stranger in an elevator in Superman Returns. It looks like Superman has made the headlines again.

The train just keeps circling the metropolis; its speed increasing and buildings are vibrating. Boom. Cut to a bunch of people standing on what looks like a subway platform. The floor cracks, then the wall splits in two. The group of people take a quick step to the side. They look at each other. Kevin Spacey, sorry, Lex Luthor, smirks.

The scene pauses. I turn to my left where Superman Returns director Bryan Singer is seated in the Warner Hollywood office in West Hollywood, California. He looks back, with the exact same smirk. You can tell he's quite happy with the looks of awe on our faces.

'Want to see more?' he asked.

We all thought that he was going to show us some drawings; after all, he had brought in a mock-up of the new Superman Returns poster just as we finished the interview. We followed him, our hearts thumping and not saying anything, as he led us into the room where we first heard the theme song come out of.

And there it was. On the huge television hooked up to the editing machines was a young Clark Kent running through the farm as he discovers his incredible powers. He takes a slight leap and ends up on a huge water tanker.

The look of shock on his face matched ours. We couldn't believe what we were watching. We were possibly the first few - if not the first Malaysians - to watch actual footage from the movie.

"You want to see more? Maybe I should show you ... nah, maybe not," Singer teased. Pause. "Oh, why not," he said as he dragged the mouse looking for another scene. He obviously knew what he was looking for. We, on the other hand, didn't know what else was in store.

Does Kevin Spacey have what it takes to play the ruthless Lex Luthor? We’ll just have to wait and see.

We heard a click only to see something flying across the screen. It wasn't a bird, but it sure was a plane ... heading to crash into a baseball field.

The look of horror on the faces of the people sitting in the stands was priceless (again, not unlike ours) until a swoosh flashed across the screen and something in blue and red grabbed hold of the nose of the plane and tried to slow it down as it dove towards the pitch. Would it crash?

Singer stopped the footage just before we could see if Superman had indeed saved the day.

In fact, we didn't get to see Superman doing much at all on screen.

But if the countless of hours of hard work that went into making the movie, the beautiful footage that we witnessed, and his passion for bringing the man with the red underpants back to the big screen after a 19-year absence was anything to go by, then we had already met Superman that day.

Funny I did not search any tips or info about the software in the internet. One of the superhero origin that really makes my head spin is the Flash. The Flash has many secret identities. This is worse than the Green Lantern.

THE FLASH is the story of what happens when you mess around with chemicals and get struck by lightning. Apparently, the combination of the two equals developing the ability to run at near-light speeds. Seriously, in all three versions of the characters’ origins, they get doused with chemicals while being hit by lightning (ok so the BARRICK character gets his speed from inhaling some hazardous fumes). In recent years the comic book has adopted a revisionist origin for the characters, revealing that all these speedsters gained their powers from an energy field beyond the speed of light dubbed THE SPEED FORCE. So anyways he can run real fast, among other speed-based abilities.

Without dismissing the claims of sightings of 'Bigfoot', he said his staff had found no physical evidence of the presence of 'Bigfoot' either in the Endau-Rompin National Park or the Tanjung Piai National Park.

Sightings of hairy creatures said to be about three metres tall have trickled in over the years, especially from along the forest spine connecting Endau Rompin, Kota Tinggi and Tanjung Piai.

In the latest sighting, a fish researcher from the Johor branch of the Malaysian Nature Society claimed he spotted 'Bigfoot' footprints at a swamp near Sungai Sedili in Kampung Mawai, Kota Tinggi.

MNS adviser Vincent Chow said there had also been numerous 'Bigfoot' sightings by villagers, who refer to the creature as hantu jarang gigi (snaggle-toothed ghost).

Villagers claimed they were usually seen during the monsoon and fruiting seasons, sometimes raiding orchards but not harming anyone.

Chow said, as a child, he had joined his father on search expeditions whenever a sighting of the creature was reported.

A new online payment processor is in the works to compete against Ebay’s Paypal system. Tentatively called Google Wallet, the new system is being developed by the Mountain View, CA, search engine giant and is expected to have an official launch date by early 2006. Choice is good and soon consumers may have a viable alternative to quirky Paypal.

Rumors of the new payment processing system from Google surfaced online in June 2005. Speculation has been rampant as to when or even if the new system would be released, but now it appears that a beta version of the program will soon be made available.

Google Wallet, if successful, may become a great alternative to eBay’s Paypal system. In October 2004, the entire Paypal system collapsed for five days, although Paypal insisted that they were only “intermittent issues” that “would soon be addressed.” This outage coupled with what many have long considered to be terrible customer service issues, e.g., unauthorized charge backs to members’ accounts, onerous fees, and “customer-no-service", has made Google’s timing especially sweet.

Related to Google Wallet, is a recent rumor that Google may take direct aim at the likes of eBay and Craig’s List and start an online auction/classified listing site.

All of this is good news for you, the consumer, as competition heats up in the payment processor wars. Stay tuned...these are exciting times in which we live!

Whether it is distribution of services or streamlining of processes in manufacturing your product; you will need to address the issues of total quality management. Yes, you can call it whatever you like; change the name, but no matter what you must consider these issues or you are doomed to failure. I therefore recommend the book;

”Total Quality Management-Strategic Planning” by Stephen George.

It is a great book and great to see that Deming and Fredrick Winslow Taylor attitude of modern business of the World have been studied and re-invented processes to manage and improve the manufacturing techniques, which keeps the corporations of this country rolling. It is a good book to read this now in America as everyone has fallen on an easy life and unwilling to do what it takes to increase productivity at work. Now recently in an economic downturn of the few prior years we saw that many people were waiting around doing nothing and expecting something to change rather than focusing on their core businesses and looking for ways to cut costs and become more efficient. Even though the book’s title itself is the buzz-word of the 80’s it still provides clues to what is wrong with modern day fundamental management and processes of the Large Corporation, no wonder they are so easy to beat up on. They cannot compete because they waste and are drown in their own inactive methodology and attitudes, this of course while trying to deal with the unending Tsunami of over regulation which changes like the political wind.

I think it is good to re-read such books of their day and not dismiss them. This is one, which is a keeper, because our large corporations keep repeating the same scenario over and over again. How can we keep teaching the leaders of tomorrow, when we negate the past and methods that got us here and adapt some new unproven method without understanding the original problem? Thus compounding the original problem with a new problem from the result of the test methods? It is good to every once in a while have break though methods, but until you are able to prove them, you should simultaneously have incremental improvements on known quantities. And just because everyone else has fallen for pie in the sky new techniques does not mean they work. Things only work when they actually work, not because someone says they do.

Deming proved his methods to the World, and then they were accepted but modified, and modifications upon modifications ensued, eventually every job in a corporation was done with TQM in mind. Including bathroom placement of toiletries. Yet as soon as everything was in place they found out it was all wrong and everything was modified, yet it was modified as a copy, not from the original. It is like following the letter of the law instead of the intent. How can someone negate the past results, ones which actually worked and now teach something else that does not work based on theory of what could be? They say America’s secret weapon is its Management Techniques? How can that be when all the workers are providing zero productivity? Obviously someone forgot to tell the organization that from the top to the bottom it is not working at all. Apparently the stock market is backwards, because when profits are up even if short term the organization is falling apart and then it regroups and when everything is getting fixed profits are down, so to keep profits up, simply keep destroying the inner workings of the company until it ends or goes to zero market capitalization like Enron. Yes, well of course things are not that bad, but it sure made for an interesting quote? The fact is no matter what buzz word you use, every company should address Total Quality Management and therefore every executive, supplier, large customer or employee ought to understand the process and read the book. Everyone who is in management of any business should read at least one of these type books per week from any era from Amsterdam to the present then you will understand what is said in this book review.

Will Weblogs blow up the world's favorite search engine?

Google and Weblogs seem inextricably tied together, as link-rich blogs are increasingly influencing the algorithms of Google's search engine.

But with great power comes great responsibility... and the weblog community is only now beginning to come to terms with a new application that subverts the very technology that powers Google, the world's favorite search engine.
Yes, we're referring to the Google Bomb

What's a Google Bomb?
Google Bombs were conceived last April as part of a brilliant gag by Adam Mathes. In his own words:

Google is unique among search engines in that while it almost always
shows you pages that have the exact keywords you are looking for, occasionally
it will show you pages that don't have those keywords, but other pages linked to
that page with those words.

I first discovered this when searching for internet rockstar, which
turned up Ben's page. [editor: Adam is referring to internet rockstar Ben
Brown] At the time though, he did not actually have that phrase on
his page however the legions of teeny-bopper blogger morons who linked to him
always used that phrase in their links.

Adam identified a critical loophole in Google's algorithm. This article I'm writing may be about Google Bombs... but if enough sites linked to it using the phrase "Aunt Jemima," then this article might come up as the first search result for "Aunt Jemima." In other words, the linker can impact the Google Rank of the linkee.

And thus was born the Google Bomb. As Adam notes:

[S]imply having tons of the same links with the same phrase on a single page
will do nothing. It requires a multitude of pages to have that link with
specific link text. But this power can be harnessed with a concentrated group
effort.

So a single Google Bomb isn't enough... you need an army of bloggers throwing Google Bombs into their weblogs.

Adam lobbed the first Google Bomb as a joke, aimed squarely at a friend of his: Andy "Talentless Hack" Pressman. Amazingly, a year later, Adam's Google Bomb demonstrates tremendous staying power, as Andy's website is still the number one search result for "Talentless Hack":

Adam's Google Bomb may have been a joke, but since then the practice of Google Bombing has begun to spread throughout the blogging community. Which begs the question:

Why Do People Google Bomb?
Here at Microcontent News headquarters, we identified four top reasons why people bomb Google:

Humor
Ego
Money
Justice

Let's take a look at each of these

1. Humor Bombs
Admit it... it's pretty funny to see your friend come up in Google as the #1 Talentless Hack in the whole world. Granted you have to find search keywords that don't get a lot of traffic, but that shouldn't be too hard.

2. Ego Bombs
It's become fashionable to be the top search result for your first name (or barring that, your full name). David Gallagher - freelance writer for the New York Times - provided one such example on his personal blog:

I've decided that I want to be the most famous
David Gallagher on the Internet, and if you have a Web site, you can help.
How? Link to this site like so: David
Gallagher.
As of March 1st, he's ranked number 3 in
Google... not too shabby, David.

3. Money Bombs
Of course, it's only a matter of time before someone starts making Google Bombs for profit.
As far as we know, this has yet to come to pass... but once Money Bombs become a possibility, they pose a real threat to Google. Brig over at Eatonweb floated the idea just a few days ago:

Brig, Microcontent News will Google Bomb your dad's site for free: santa cruz real estate. I'm not sure how much it will help though, as your dad is up against some tough competition: some 103K separate websites come up in Google when you search for "Santa Cruz Real Estate!"

Buying a Google Bomb is probably cheaper than buying a Google Adwords microad. But even if that price disparity disappears, it's much better to be in Google's main search results than somewhere in a side module. Given this reality, it's inevitable that Money Bombs start appearing in the weblog community soon.

4. Justice Bombs
As we saw in last week's article, Justice Bombs can be tossed at evil corporations. The target then was Critical IP, a corporation accused with telemarketing to domain name owners by stealing phone numbers out of an Internet database.

In fact, several bloggers have built Justice Bombs after last week's article... including Megan McArdle. She was nauseated the other day to hear about the R Kelly videotape:

The other day, a radio station in New York that one of my co-workers listens to
read a play-by-play of the R Kelly videotape. It is the first time I've ever
been made actually nauseous by something I heard or watched. For those who
aren't aware of it, R Kelly is a musician who purchased the services of a
14-year old girl from her family and . . . no, I can't go on. It makes me want
to get sick just thinking about it.

Ordinarily, most people would feel helpless in this sort of situation. But armed with knowledge gleaned from last week's Microcontent News, Megan proposed a Justice Bomb:

Several bloggers have already
followed suit, and just a few days after the Justice Bomb was lit, five of
the top ten results for R Kelly
videotape are already weblogs with her Google Bomb. Go Megan!

Why Google Bombs are So Effective:
We went over the mechanics of Google Bombs last week. But why do so many weblogs participate in Google Bombing?
First and foremost, it's fun. Google is an institution, and seeing your personal website pop up in a search result is exhilarating. We've watched Microcontent News become the second search result for Google Bomb (behind Adam's essay inventing the concept), giving us some personal insight into the excitement of climbing the Google ranks.

Google Bombs also tap the natural human instinct for reciprocity: "you help me with my bomb, and I'll help you with yours." [1] Most of the Google Bombing to date has been Ego Bombing anyway, which lends itself especially well to reciprocation.

Google Bombing also fulfills a fundamental need: a need for justice, and for a feeling of control over the uncontrollable. When Megan McArdle got upset over the R Kelly videotape, she was able to strike back with a Google Bomb. Now, there's a good chance that someone searching for the videotape will read the message she's written just for them:

There is a special circle in hell reserved for people who watch things like this. Do humanity a favor and either get some help or take yourself out of the game.

How to Make a Google Bomb
Adam published instructions in his original Google Bomb essay:

Get a web site. ...
Whenever you update your site, ... be sure to include [an HTML link to your target site. Make sure the text of the link is the search term you'd like to own]
Add your site to Google.
Wait for the magic to happen!

Defusing a Google Bomb
So far, all the Google Bombs we've seen have been built using Adam's instructions.
Blogging a link (AKA "link-blogging") as a Google Bomb can provide a powerful short term boost in Google rank... but as we saw last week with the Critical IP example, the Google Bomb drops in power over time. (The Google Bomb raced to the #1 search position for "Critical IP" within two days... but two weeks later, it was already down to #46, and falling.)
It's clear that somehow Google was weighting the Google Bomb links less as they aged. This "temporal weighting" might be part of Google's algorithm. Still, something about that doesn't feel right - after all, isn't most of the Google database made up of older links?
More likely, the defusing of Google Bombs is largely a consequence of blog posts scrolling off a weblog's frontpage. Google almost certainly weights links more heavily if they're on the frontpage of a site, rather than on an interior page. After a week (or a month, in some cases), most Google Bomb links have been moved to archive pages - and so bloggers inadvertently end up defusing their very own bombs.

A More Powerful Google Bomb
A new type of Google Bomb offers a way around this. It's based on a blogging phenomenon named by Doc Searls in December of 2000. We're referring, of course, to blogrolling.
Blogrolling is a relatively new name to a very old tradition. Most websites have traditionally had a Links page, where the webmaster points to their favorite websites. Weblogs have carried on the tradition... but rather than have a separate page for their links, they typically have their favorite links on the side of their page. Thanks to Doc's neologism, this "sidebar" section is increasingly called the "Blogrolling" section of a weblog.
Most importantly, a blogrolling link never scrolls off a weblog's frontpage. This greatly magnifies the impact of a blogrolling link, making them a much more potent Google Bomb.
Blogrolling Google Bombs have yet to hit the weblog scene. When they do, they could become the next generation Google Bomb, with a much longer impact than link-blogging bombs.

The Staying Power of Google Bombs
Google can be foiled over the long run, as mapped out in this excellent essay on the Church of Scientology. As the author puts it:

[T]he Church of
Scientology, a large corporate entity, has figured out how to exploit
[Google's algorithm] to their advantage by having large quantities of domains
that are packed heavily with links to each other

In other words, this essay alleges that the Church has bought hundreds of domains and had them all point both to each other... and of course, to Scientology-friendly websites. It may not involve weblogs, but it sure sounds like a Google Bomb to us!

It should be noted that some bloggers are striking back at the Church with their own Google Bomb. They've achieved some short term success, getting Operation Clambake - a site dedicated to debunking Scientology - up to #4 in the Google ranks.

While a valiant effort, I'm not convinced that this Google Bomb will defeat the bombs placed by the Church. After all, these bloggers are fighting blogrolling bombs with link-blogging bombs. Once the links scroll off their weblog frontpages, Operation Clambake should fall back in the Google rankings.

Implications for Google Bombs
If the Church of Scientology can foil Google, then Google Bombs - especially ones based on blogrolling - could potentially have a serious and long-term impact on Google rankings.
This has serious implications for the future of Google Bombs.

Watch out, Google!
One or two people linkblogging some Google Bombs isn't going to make a big difference in Google ranks in the long term. But teams of people working together to blogroll Google Bombs could have a serious and long-term impact on Google rankings.

Sooner or later, these teams of people will emerge... and when they do, their collective power on Google will be staggering.

Google, you'd better start watching out for these "Bomb Squads." Weblogs can help filter billions of webpages for you... but they could also help destroy the very technology that Google is based on!

The Emergence of Bomb Squads
Bomb Squads have yet to emerge, but all the ingredients are there.
One interesting development: a blogger has auctioned off a blogrolling link as a joke. [2]
Tony Pierce, the blogger in question, posted his auction to eBay on February 22nd. His auction description is fun to read... but it's easy to picture the same description applied less humorously to an actual Google Bomb auction:

Tony was just doing this for fun - and as weblogs gimmicks go, this one was particularly successful in driving his traffic up. But the stage has been set for real Google Bombs.

Impact of Google Bomb Squads on Weblogs
The emergence of a Google Bomb Squad system could solve a thorny problem for bloggers: how to make money off of their time-consuming hobby.

Getting search engines to send you traffic has become a big industry with cryptic acronyms (SEO, short for Search Engine Optimization) and fancy industry conferences. Joining a Google Bomb Squad could let bloggers tap what's become a multi-million dollar industry. It could even make life easier for the SEO industry - after all, as Google's become more popular, their usual bag of tricks has become less effective. Google Bombs and Bomb Squads could be the killer app that SEOs have been looking for.

Impact of Google Bomb Squads on Google
It's clear that Google Bombs are incredibly effective at building traffic. What's not so clear is what Google should do about it.
After all, a Google Bomb is extremely difficult to distinguish from a genuine link. Take our last Microcontent News article, for example. Just one day after its publication, it had already catapulted to the #1 search position for "Google Weblogs" This is despite the fact that there are 40,000 weblogs that share those very same search terms. In this case, that's a good thing: Google is giving Microcontent News credit for the dozens of links we received from the blogging community.

But how would Google know if all this linking had been a Google Bomb? Do they create an algorithm that defuses Google Bombs? Do they create a self-policing system to report sites that Google Bomb? Or do they - gasp! - ban people who sign up for Google Bomb Squads?
And what comprises a bannable Google Bomb?

For example, is it wrong to Google Bomb the Church of Scientology, or Critical IP? Is it more or less wrong to try and profit off of a Google Bomb? What exactly would comprise a offense worthy of Google excommunication?

At this point, it's unclear. But Google has generated so much goodwill in the weblog community that any guidelines they issue will surely be taken into consideration by the blogging world. Google, let us know what's right or wrong in the world of Google Bombs!

In the meantime, all your search are belong to us. Somebody set up us the bomb!

Commercials ; INTERVIEW WITH YASMIN AHMAD: 'Harmony, not homogeneity'

Hello again from me, Remi. Marketing is very important. Even if our product doesn't do much, but with good marketing, we have the best product ever sold. One of the marketing methods is commercials. In this article, I found that commercials is not just to market productor services, but also it can effect the way of our living in the comunity. This is an interview with Yasmin Ahmad, got it from www.nst.com.my.

SEPET director Yasmin Ahmad is best known for creating poignant portraits such as the Petronas festival commercials. But her latest work, the 'LRT commercial', touched a raw nerve. Two MPs made a fuss about it in Parliament, offended that a Malay had been cast as the rude and boorish villain who would not give up his seat to those who needed it more. The exuberant and unrepentant filmmaker tells LEE SIEW LIAN why she did it.

Q: How is Sepet doing?
A: It's still on in Megamall. It has been on for a month now, and full house even on weekdays. It has made RM600,000 so far, about half of what Gerak Khas made. Given that Sepet was shown in nine cinemas, it is doing much better than Gerak Khas, which was shown in 39 cinemas.

Q: How did the LRT commercial for the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage's Courtesy Campaign come about?
A: It started with the ministry ordering Finas (the national film development corporation) to find the person responsible for the Petronas commercials. People at Finas who never returned my calls suddenly were desperate to see me, which was very delicious for me. In the meantime, the director-general, Datuk Azizah Abud, tried to call me. She used to be in the military so she's very impatient with government people; she told Finas to call me in the morning, and by afternoon, she was trying to get me on the phone herself. She's brilliant.

When she met me, I already had an idea. It's a script that I wrote long ago and no one had any use for, and I really liked it. Whenever I get an idea like the LRT script, I think: "I'm not smart enough to have thought of this myself. It must have come from God."

Then when I tried to sell it to Petronas, it said, "No, no, no, we can't do this". I was really very sad. How could God give me something so beautiful and then not get anyone to take it? There must be use for it. I didn't get this idea for nothing. Sure enough when the ministry called, I said I have just the script!

You know, if I had made it any earlier, I wouldn't have been the director I am now, I wouldn't have been able to execute it so well. All good things come to those who wait, and all that. Azizah said she liked it, but it's a bit quiet. "No dialogue-ke?" No, I said.

Cakap sikit pun tak de? No, tak de."But we have a jingle already written to be sung by Siti Nurhaliza (I think). I want you to use the jingle." I said I don't want.She said: "You dare say no to me?" I said yes. She said: "I'll pay you." and I said: "You keep your money." She looked at me and said: "I like her."

THE PRESENTATION

Q: So it worked out well in terms of the commercial?
A: I was supposed to make a presentation to the minister, but the D-G gatal and told him the story. The minister (Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim) said it was too quiet. She said: "You see? Write something-la."And I told her: "I think it's going to be very loud". I refused to write another script, and told her to go to Filem Negara. Cheaper some more.She got angry, but then she did it anyway. She said she was going to give me the benefit of the doubt

Q: Have many people associated you with the commercial yet?
A: Haven't they? I suppose it's because I only do sentimental things.

Q: Was race something that was in your mind when you cast it?
A: Yes. When I was a little girl, we'd move from community to community. Sometimes ordinary, sometimes mixed. One of my mum's best friends was Chinese, Mrs Tan, and another an Indian.
When we were in a Malay community, there would be talk, what the Indians and Chinese are like. So would the Indian and Chinese have their truisms about what the Malays were like.

It's the same (everywhere), rooted in fear and ignorance, fear of the unknown.

In making this commercial, I wanted a story about a young man who won't help a pregnant woman.I figured it had to come down to race. You have to choose talent and they will ask you if you want the old woman to be like this or like that, what age, and all those details.
Coupled with that is that I'm a Melayu who's writing and directing, so it's bad form to portray somebody from another race.
If a Melayu puts on a Melayu, then it's not so bad because they are my own people. And there are rude people from all races and polite people, too.Then I thought: "Oh, I know, I'll make the blind man a Melayu." So there is good and bad in every race.

Q: Many people have missed the blind man, focusing on the rude young Malay.
A: Ya. They see a blind man but don't see his race. But it was deliberate. I knew I had to balance it out so I made the blind man Melayu.

Q: You said you were happy there was controversy. Why?
A: You know what Orson Welles said? "If there's anything worse than being talked about, it is not being talked about."Someone told me the commercial has made a difference, that the LRT is better now. This girl told me, after the MPs brought the issue up: "Dia orang tak naik LRT!"

Q: And now, you've started this huge thing where everyone has to put (people's background and race) into context.
A: You know this Satu Bangsa Malaysia thing? I'm really not interested in seeing us as a homogenous society, as if we are all the same. Don't want all this (stuff) about integration.

I don't want integration. I want Indians and Chinese to stay as they are. I love them as they are. I don't want them to be like me, and I don't want to be like them.

Q: So if it's not integration, then what should we seek?
A: Harmony, not homogeneity.

Q: What about tolerance, then?
A: It's terrible. Tolerance is "I don't like you but I will bear with you." But if tolerance is all I can get, then, okay-lah, I'll settle for it. You can't force people to like people.

Q: What exactly are you hoping to achieve, to get people talking about rudeness or sensitivity?
A: It is about rudeness. It's like a beautiful painting but there will always be one or two (people) who will say this is not right, or that is wrong, to make it a little bit less like a beautiful painting.
When people see the actor (Adlin Aman Ramli) they maki him. He said people cursed him on the street. His sister was snubbed by her work mates, who said her brother kurang ajar, badly brought up. They over-reacted, but he said he didn't mind.

What the commercial touched in people, by and large, is the rudeness. The two MPs basically brought up (a different issue), which is race. But to take race as the biggest issue is an injustice to Malaysia.

Like Orked said in Sepet: "Who cares why somebody likes somebody because of their race? It's when they hate them, that is the problem."

Using Paypal for International Users

Using paypal as an International user is highly ineffective. Paypal is an ebay company and it has a reputation as a very effective method of paying and receiving money online! It has received amazing reviesw from people who has been using paypal for a long time. However, this is an honest review from an International user (particularly, Malaysia and some of the SEA region) using paypal for projects and receiving money online.

First off, if you're a user from the United States or some of the other approved countries that paypal has approved of, using paypal is probably going to be a breeze. I have not had the privilege of using paypal as a US resident (quite obviously) so, I cannot give you a review on using paypal as one! But as an International merchant using paypal, this is what I have to say - YOU MAY NEVER GET TO SEE YOUR MONEY AT ALL!

I am a genuine merchant/freelancer who was using paypal to receive money from my International clients. They have all asked me if I had problems using paypal for payment, and obviously, keen on trying to tie the project in, I said I did NOT have a problem using paypal. I figured that if I DID eventually have a problem, I was pretty sure paypal would help me get my money from the account. After all, it's MY money in THEIR account and they cannot possibly keep the money that I have earned.

In the beginning stages of using paypal, it's easy peasy - nothing to it. All a user has to do in order to start using paypal is to register. The registration process is easy enough. They automatically approve your account to make it easy for you to use paypal. Using paypal to get money into your paypal account is simple. Just provide the payer with your paypal ID: your email address. The payer using paypal as a payment gateway will only have to log into the paypal account and then using paypal's tools to send the money to your account. Simple enough.
Using paypal : here's where it gets a little tough Using paypal to receive money posed some problems to me, as an International user.

1. VerificationIn order to withdraw money from your paypal account, you need to first verify your paypal account. The point in using paypal as a payment gateway is lost here because in order to verify the account, you need to have a US bank account or a credit card.

If you're like me, an International user who does not have a means of getting a US bank account, then using paypal can get pretty rocky...ok, well, tricky. I have explored the possibility of opening a US bank account from where I live, it's possible. But the setup fee was huge. You need to pay USD299 as a setup fee. Yes, SETUP fee, not deposit. I would understand it if they told me that I would need to pay USD100 or USD50 as a setup fee (which translates to about Ringgit Malaysia 380 or Ringgit Malaysia 190) with a certain limitations to a deposit, but having to pay a setup fee of USD299 was too much for me.

You can always get a credit card to verify your account in order to start using paypal to send money and receive money online. Sure thing. Except….I don't have a credit card. But I got myself a debit card cause I was sure using paypal was the only way to accepting payments from my International clients. But even if you verified your account in order to start using paypal, you cannot withdraw your money from your paypal account STILL. You STILL need to have a US bank account.

2. Sending LimitIf you have not been using paypal for a long time, like me, then you're not always aware of the small tiny little word 'unverified - Malaysia' that sits comfortably right next to your paypal balance. The sending limit is there if you're not a verified paypal user. For starters, paypal has capped off the sending limit at USD100. USD100 limit on the amount you can ever send through your paypal account until you get yourself verified.

I found myself in a tussle using paypal when I send USD80 to someone and then they told me that I can only send USD20 more to someone before I have to get verified. So, there was a problem using paypal to send money to someone too? And using paypal a payment gateway was also shot because I can't seem to get the money out.

You see, what I was trying to do was to send whatever money I had in there to someone else in the US and get them to send the money back to me through iKobo. And although I had found the right person for this task, I was still having problems using paypal because I can't even get my money out of there to someone else so that they can send me the money - so that I can buy milk and diapers for my kids! Sheesh!

In summary: what was my experience in using paypal?

It was the pits! This is a user who is still hoping that paypal will brush up on their system to make it more user-friendly for International users. But unless they finetune their system to make it more user-friendly, I'd rather be shot in the foot before I'd use it again.

First off, the withdrawal process is lousy because I cannot withdraw the money out from the paypal account therefore, using paypal as a payment option means that I will never smell the money that I have earned. I couldn't even close the account until I got verified, can you believe that? The person I spent talking (long distance) over the phone with for 2 hours couldn't find me a solution. Secondly, the sending limit. What happens that those people who wishes to send money to someone but don't have a credit card? What happens to the money in there?
The only way out for International people using paypal is to either get a US bank account or spend the money on ebay.

Which makes perfect sense - paypal is part of ebay, didn't I say?

I'll just stick to what works for now - my iKobo account.

Hello again my fellow friends and visitors. This time, I am posting informations about PayPal. For those of you who are new to Paypal, the following post could relly help you to understand more. insyaAllah..

If like me, you spend a lot of buying and selling at auctions, or have a website where you want to sell to folks worldwide, sending and receiving payments overseas can be a nightmare! Banks and Building Societies can charge you a fortune in commission for converting cheques into sterling (and vice versa) and you can lose a lot of profit. An alternative is PayPal, a simple and reliable way to send money to any email address in the world and accruing no commission charges.

Although American based, international users (from 22 countries including the UK) can now take advantage of this useful means of sending and receiving cash anywhere in the world. It’s also a boon if you sign up to lots of ‘get paid’ schemes on the Internet, as more and more are now offering PayPal as an alternative payment method. No more hefty commission charges! UK subscribers can register a credit card or bank checking account at PayPal and have funds transferred directly from and to them. It’s very easy, very secure and very reliable. It is also a well-established programme that is serving thousands of Internet customers.

Signing up for a personal account at PayPal is very straightforward and completely free, well, almost! You fill out some basic details including name, address, telephone number, email address and your selected password. Plus there are a couple of extra security questions to prevent fraud. Your email address becomes your log in name.

Next you are required to enter details of a credit card or debit card (currently only Visa and MasterCard are allowed) under a secure server. The card details have to be confirmed and verified, so you will be debited the sum of $1 from your card, which is completely refundable to your PayPal account once your card has been validated. What happens is that the $1 debit is shown on your credit card statement along with a numeric code, you enter this code into your account at PayPal and your card is then confirmed and a refund given. You can choose to enter your card details at a later date if you are wary at registration.

Then it’s a matter of responding to the email you receive from PayPal to verify your details and your account is then set up and ready to go!

Once registered, you have a number of options. You can link your own checking account to Paypal so that amounts in your PayPal account can be transferred to and from it at a mere click of the mouse button. You can also add funds to your PayPal account from both credit card or bank account, and vice versa! Be aware however that all funds in your PayPal account are in American dollar currency and not British Sterling! When you transfer them to your bank account or credit card, these will be converted to pounds, but expect a conversion fee in some cases. You can also add additional email addresses to your account, up to 8 in all, which is useful for those that have separate addresses for rewards schemes, auctions etc.

I recently sold a Britannia Beanie at auction to an American customer, and despite my making clear that I would only accept payment in sterling funds, he was insistent that it was dollars or nothing. PayPal was the answer, he was able to transfer $50 to my account that I was able to either withdraw to my credit card or bank account, or leave there in readiness for the next time I needed to make payment to somebody via the web. You can also top up your PayPal account at any time using your credit card or bank account.

As another bonus, many Internet based retailers are now offering PayPal as a payment option and as mentioned above, lots of ‘get paid to be online’ schemes now offer PayPal as an option for being paid. Considerably better than banking a $10 dollar rewards cheque for instance, and losing practically all of it through bank commission charges!

Currently, PayPal has a customer base of over 8 million users; I’m one of them! I find it reliable, fast and efficient and auction bidding has taken on a new lease of life! Likewise, more and more individuals are leaving their jobs to fulfill their entrepreneurial dreams.
While these ventures may ultimately be very successful (e.g., Google and Microsoft were both launched by students), they face certain challenges in their business plans and capital raising processes. The foremost challenge is overcoming the lack of experience of the management team. A classis chicken-and-egg problem presents itself – the management team has no past company successes to point to, and can’t prove itself unless given the opportunity to launch the business. While this problem is nearly always the case for graduating students, it also presents itself to many entrepreneurs, particularly those who are launching their first ventures.
To overcome this challenge, these ventures must represent themselves as having a great team by attracting a stellar management team and/or advisors. By attracting a quality management team, even if the team will not start until after financing, it gives investors that confidence that the plan will be properly executed. It also proves that the entrepreneurs have the ability to “sell” others on their vision. The management team need not be complete before seeking capital, since additional members will most likely be added after capital is raised. For instance, shortly after Google raised capital from Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Omid Kordestani left Netscape to accept a position as vice president of business development and sales, and Urs Hölzle was hired away from UC Santa Barbara as vice president of engineering.
Attracting high-quality advisors builds great credibility since if respected individuals are willing to risk their reputations by taking an advisory position, the venture must have some merit. Advisors can also help with the execution of the business and sometimes will also provide the needed capital. In Google’s case, when no major portal was interested in partnering with or funding the company, Larry Page and Sergey Brin were able to convince Andy Bechtolsheim, one of the founders of Sun Microsystems, to become an advisor and investor. Bechtolsheim contributed the initial $100,000 to the company.
Even if the venture is able to attract quality management teams and advisors, it will always be at a disadvantage versus other ventures headed by entrepreneurs who have “been there, done that” successfully in the past. To compensate for this, these ventures must really know their customers, know their market and know their competition. By possessing an in depth knowledge of the external factors that will effect the company’s success, the entrepreneurs can both create a solid business strategy and convince investors that an opportunity really exists. If the opportunity truly exists, then investors know that even if the venture is initially mismanaged, then they can hire additional managers later to put it back on course.
In summary, when students or first time entrepreneurs, begin developing their business strategies and plans, they must compensate for the management deficiencies they possess versus established entrepreneurs. By doing this and showing a comprehensive knowledge of their market, these ventures can level the capital raising playing field. Fortunately, these ventures can point to a long list of other successful companies which were launched by students and/or first time entrepreneurs, most notably Google and Microsoft.
